Indeed they do provide a utility but for me was mostly waste of time.
We have 6 of these sort of drives. The firmware updates did not install on some of the drives no matter what i did, so i could not get rid of the Smartware.
The script may well come in handy. All very annoying as really do not want this extra partition showing ever !

I had a similar issue, but 'fixed' it a different way. The Virtual CD in question comes from my Toshiba 1 TB external disk, which is my Time Machine disk. Every time the external disk connected, that damned virtual CD was mounted as well. I didn't want it! Since there are MANY ways to do the same thing in Unix, my solution was to modify (or create) /etc/fstab, and add the following line: The 040 escapes a blank character (octal 40, hex 20, decimal 32), as the name of my VCD was 'Virtual CD.' The 'noauto' tells Unix not to automatically mount the file system with that label.

Once Western Digital unbreaks Virtual CD (VCD) Manager for Mac, you can download it and use it to control whether the virtual CD is mounted.

This one-liner worked well for me in the Terminal.
sudo sh -c 'echo UUID=`diskutil info /Volumes/WD SmartWare/ | grep 'UUID' | awk '{print $NF}'` none hfs rw,noauto 0 0 >> /etc/fstab'
Eject the disk after and it should not come back.

I had a big problem trying to update the firmware so I could run the software (Virtual_CD_Manager_v1003) that removes this garbage. The firmware labeled 'WDEssential_and_Elite_FirmwareUpdater_v1.0.0.16(2.003)' crashed every time. Useless.

Note to self: next time you want to save $15 on buying a drive, factor in the wasted hour removing garbage installed by idiot manufacturers like Western Digital. What makes these bozos think they know better than their users? They clearly don't.

I have a My Book for Mac hard drive that used to be connected to an Intel-based Mac. Now it is attached to a G4 Titanium Powerbook and is seen and working. I would like to try intalling the Western Digital utilities software on this older machine running OS X 10.5.8 PowerPC.

The current version of Smartware doesn’t support PowerPC any more. I was able to download version 1.3.3.6 through WD via a link in this Community area. (The posting engine is preventing me from putting the address here.)

After install it crashes immediately on running it. The menu bar icon appears and lets you view the installed version but Smartware itself won’t run.

I tinkered with the download link and found that 1.3.3.8 was still on the server. This version installs and runs and can analyze my internal disk but it doesn’t see the external hard drive even though it is mounted on the desktop and appears in System Profiler. It is formatted at HFS+ Journaled with a GUID type partition table.

The only reason I care to use Smartware is so I can change the device settings. I assume since I’m not interested in actually booting on a PowerPC machine, the GUID partition type is of no consequence.
