The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe thecontentofthe /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, anddelete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder.To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall theMPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.

MPEG Streamclip may have an unwieldy name, but the application is dead simple to use. Okay, it hasn't been updated since 2008 and, unlike HandBrake, comes with no presets. Particles in a solid. But if your making more than H.264 MP4 files, then it's just what you need.
MPEG Streamclip is in the list of software at Videohelp. It requires the specific program Quicktime Alternative 1.81 to run correctly.
In the past I have seen Quicktime load where I don't want it to as a default.
How does Quicktime Alternative 1.81 install and how to prevent it from 'taking over everything'?
